Kashmir: India vs Pakistan vs China
When British India split in 1947, Kashmir's Hindu ruler chose India, but the majority Muslim population wanted Pakistan. They've fought 3 wars over it. China controls a piece too (Aksai Chin). Both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers. It's one of the most dangerous borders on Earth.

Taiwan: Country or Province?
Taiwan governs itself with its own military, currency, passport, and elected president. But China says it's a Chinese province. Most countries don't officially recognize Taiwan as a country (to avoid angering China). Yet Taiwan makes 90% of the world's advanced computer chips.

One of the longest-running territorial disputes. Israel was established in 1948. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank and Gaza. Most of the world recognizes Palestine (UN observer state), but borders are bitterly contested. Jerusalem is claimed as capital by both sides.

Crimea: Russia vs Ukraine
Crimea was part of Ukraine since 1954. Russia annexed it in 2014, claiming the majority Russian-speaking population wanted to join. Most of the world considers it illegally occupied Ukrainian territory. This was a precursor to Russia's 2022 full invasion of Ukraine.

Western Sahara: Africa's Last Colony?
Morocco controls most of Western Sahara and considers it part of Morocco. The Sahrawi people (represented by the Polisario Front) want independence. Algeria supports them. The UN has tried for decades to hold a referendum but it never happens. Most maps show it as disputed.

Kosovo: Europe's Newest Dispute
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. About half the world's countries recognize it (including USA, UK, most of EU). Serbia, Russia, and China do not. Kosovo has its own government, flag, and soccer team, but can't join the UN because Russia would veto it.
