A hidden gem is a place that is beautiful, interesting, or special, but not as globally famous as Paris, Rome, or New York. Hidden gems can be small towns, national parks, islands, valleys, historic sites, or food regions.
Some places are less famous because they are harder to reach, less advertised, politically complicated, expensive to access, or simply overshadowed by nearby famous places.
Slovenia, Albania, Georgia, Montenegro, and parts of Portugal, Romania, and the Baltics are often described as underrated. They have mountains, coastlines, old towns, food, and culture, but fewer visitors than Europe's biggest tourism countries.
Oman, Uruguay, Laos, Taiwan's east coast, Colombia's smaller towns, Kyrgyzstan's mountains, and Namibia's deserts can all feel like hidden gems depending on the traveler.
Social media can make a quiet place famous very quickly. A town that was once peaceful can become crowded after a few viral videos. Being discovered can bring money, but also pressure.
