Unit 4 ยท How People Live

๐Ÿ‘ถ Lesson 28: Youngest vs Oldest

Some countries are full of children. Others are full of grandparents.

๐Ÿ“– Learn

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Median Age

Median age means the age in the middle: half the population is younger, and half is older. A low median age means many children and young adults. A high median age means more older people.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Young Countries

Many of the world's youngest countries are in Africa. Niger, Uganda, Angola, Mali, Chad, and Democratic Republic of Congo have very young populations. This creates huge needs for schools, jobs, housing, and healthcare.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Older Countries

Japan, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Greece, and Portugal are examples of aging societies. These countries often have low birth rates and long life expectancy.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Why Age Structure Matters

A young country needs schools and jobs. An older country needs healthcare, pensions, caregivers, and workers to support retirees. Age structure changes what governments must build.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Birth Rates and Life Expectancy

Countries age when people have fewer children and live longer. This often happens as countries become wealthier, more urban, and more educated.

๐Ÿ”ฎ

The Future Workforce

Young populations can be a huge advantage if children get education and jobs. Without opportunity, a young population can create pressure. Demographics are powerful, but policy matters.
