Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey, and France all have famous Mediterranean coastlines. The Mediterranean is popular because it combines beaches with old towns, food, history, and short travel distances between countries.
The Maldives, Seychelles, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii, and the Caribbean are famous for blue water and coral reefs. Many tropical islands depend heavily on tourism, which makes them vulnerable to storms, rising seas, and travel slowdowns.
Some beaches are famous not for calm water, but for waves. Hawaii, Portugal, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, and California all have surf cultures shaped by wind, ocean depth, and coastline shape.
Beach tourism can create pollution, crowding, high housing prices, coral damage, and pressure on fresh water. Beautiful places need careful management so they are not loved to death.
Some famous beaches are cold or dramatic: Iceland's black sand beaches, Oregon's rocky coast, New Zealand's wild beaches, and Norway's fjord coast. A beach can be beautiful without being hot.
