Places can disappear physically, economically, culturally, or ecologically. Islands can erode, villages can empty, glaciers can melt, languages can vanish, and reefs can die.
Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Maldives, and parts of the Marshall Islands face serious risks from sea level rise, storms, and saltwater entering freshwater supplies.
Glaciers in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, and other mountains are shrinking in many areas. This affects water supplies, tourism, hazards, and ecosystems.
Coral reefs can be damaged by warmer water, pollution, overfishing, and acidification. The Great Barrier Reef and many tropical reefs face pressure.
Some rural villages lose people as young adults move to cities. This can leave aging populations, closed schools, empty homes, and fading traditions.
Protection can mean sea walls, relocation plans, conservation, language programs, tourism limits, better planning, or reducing emissions. Not every place can be saved the same way.
